This
letter is to express my utmost opposition to the proposal allowing Saving Grace
Ministries to purchase and convert the Family Promise Home facility from a
retirement home into a facility for men recently released from prison who have
medical needs.
Family Promise Home is presently home to around 24 elderly retirees who are unable
to care for themselves and require others to care for them. Many of these
people have no place to go and have called the Family Promise Home facility
home for many years. Some of these residents may be left to share housing with
these ex-cons.
There are also great concerns throughout the
community for the safety of the children. There are numerous schools, parks,
beaches and playgrounds nearby. One ballpark where 100's of children
participate in little league games and play is located directly behind the
family promise home facility. There are five schools within a five mile radius
from the Family Promise Home location and one less then a mile away. If these
ex-cons are willing to travel up to 10 miles away the number of schools, playgrounds and parks
available to them more then doubles. See appendix A:
Also, there are concerns over the loss of another
business off the tax roles in our community. We already have around twenty six non-profit and nontaxable
organizations in our community. No one seems to be able to tell us how this
will affect our property value, local businesses as well as how familes and
friends of the ex-cons visiting the facility will affect our local traffic.
Many of those visiting the facility may themselves be criminals or ex-cons.
The local residents and taxpayers of the
Evans-Angola area are very disappointed with the way our local town
representatives have handled this whole situation, almost seemly keeping the
whole thing hush hush. We feel our representatives should be much more
concerned with the safety and well being of the children and the elderly in
their community. Also, we feel that more should be done to help places like
Family Promise Home who provide a service to aid the elderly.
We would appreciate any assistance that you or your
office could provide in regards to this matter in helping us in Evans-Angola as
well as those in the surrounding communities to protect the children and the
elderly by not letting their well being and the well being of the communities be
put at risk. We appreciate those who try to help others that are in need such
as these ex-cons with medical needs, but there has to be a better equipped and
a more secure area to house these ex-cons instead of so close to our children
and without destroying the lives of our elderly.
