Governor Pataki Announce Grants For
Great Lakes
Communities
Governor George
E. Pataki today announced a total of $725,000 in grant awards
to 13 Great Lakes communities under the 1996 Environmental
Protection Fund (EPF). The EPF is the state's first permanent
fund dedicated to addressing a broad range of environmental
needs.
"The Great Lakes
are precious gems that all New Yorkers can enjoy today and,
with continued vigilance in our efforts to protect and enhance
them, for generations to come," said Governor Pataki.
"The natural
resources we enjoy across this state today are not by luck or
chance; they are a direct result of good stewardship and
pride," the Governor said. "The projects announced today
represent important but modest beginnings in reclaiming the
environmental and economic values the great waterbodies of the
State provide to all New Yorkers."
Recipients and
projects to be funded within Erie County include:
Town of Evans - $75,000
for construction of a pedestrian bridge and other access
improvements at Lake Erie Beach, an area which the Town has
long sought to develop as a major waterfront recreational
facility. Construction of a pedestrian bridge over Muddy
Creek, a stream which flows through the site, is needed to
allow public access to a 5 acre shoreline parcel.
The project will also include
development of a picnic area, lighting, landscaping, and other
associated site improvements. Development of Lake
Erie Beach represents the Town's foremost priority for
revitalizing its waterfront. Where
